Rufus Bartlett1

ID#1079, b. 1789, d. 1 May 1862
Father: not yet identified
Mother: not yet identified

Birth date: 1789
Birth place: District of Maine.1

Marriage intentions for Rufus Bartlett and Cleopatra Sherwin were filed on 13 May 1815 in Clinton, Kennebec County, Maine. The practice of recording the marriage intent in the town meeting books and publishing the notice prior to the marriage ceremony gave local residents the opportunity to state their objections to a marriage. The intention does not prove that the marriage occurred, only that it was intended.2

In this case, though, the marriage did take place as Rufus and Cleopatra were married at Clinton, Kennebec County, Maine, although the exact date is not confirmed. Two dates have been reported by other researchers: 10 June 18153 or 1 June 1815.4

Rufus died from consumption on 1 May 1862 at Fork Ridge, Marshall County, Virginia.5 He was interred in the Bartlett-Rulong family cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "Rufus Bartlett." The inscription reads, "Died May 1, 1862 In his __ Yr."6
