His name reportedly appears on the gravestone as "William L. Pierce," with an inscription that reads, "Civil War, Co A 17th W.Va. Inf."2,3

Commonly known as Nancy - I'm not sure if it was just a nickname or was actually her middle name.

An alternate spelling of Nancy's married surname is Mathew.

Nancy married William R. Matthew on 15 April 1841 in Monongalia County, Virginia. The ceremony was performed by Revd. Francis H. Read.2,4

Nancy died at age 39 from diptheria on 19 May 1860 at Lick Run, Taylor County, Virginia.3
