Clarence E. Aston1

ID#147, b. 31 July 1897, d. 13 October 1904
Father: Charles Gibson Aston
Mother: Cancedella "Della" McGary

Birth date: 31 July 1897
Birth place: Rosby's Rock, Marshall County, West Virginia.1

At age 7, Clarence died on 13 October 1904 at Rosby's Rock, Marshall County, West Virginia. According to the official Register of Deaths, he died after ten days of bowel trouble.2

According to family, Clarence died in a horse-related accident at a very young age. However, I've heard multiple versions: One version is that Clarence was jumping a horse over a gate - the horse fell and threw him off, breaking his neck.3 Per another version, Clarence was doing flips on the back of a horse when he fell off and broke his neck4. A third version recounts that the fall happened along the road (Aston Ridge) just below the family home when the horse was stung by a bee and jumped.5

A nephew of Clarence told me that the family never talked about Clarence much at all3 - presumably because it was so upsetting that he died at such a young age. He was interred on 15 October 1904 in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "Clarence E. Aston."2

Emily E. "Emma" Kerns

ID#149, b. 2 January 1876, d. 10 April 1950
Father: David W. Kerns
Mother: Susana Williams

Birth date: 2 January 1876
Birth place: West Virginia.1

There are discrepancies as to her name: while she seems to have used Emma as her first name, it may have been a shortened form of Emily based on her death certificate. I have seen her middle name spelled as Eveline and as Evelyn, both of which could be pronounced the same. So which is correct: Emma Eveline or Emily Evelyn? I'm not sure, so for now I have opted to (1) treat Emily as her first name, (2) simply use a middle initial for Eveline/Evelyn , and (3) treat Emma as a nickname or commonly used name by placing it in quotes.1

Emily married Isaac Newton Ryan, son of David Ryan.

At the time of Emma's death, her address was R.D. 2, Moundsville, Meade District, Marshall County, West Virginia.1 She died at age 74 on 10 April 1950 at that same rural address, which may or may not mean she died at home.1 She was interred on 13 April 1950 in the Salem Church of Christ Cemetery, Bowman Ridge, Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia.1
