Iowa State Census

ID#2412
State censuses were often taken in years between the federal censuses. According to Ancestry.com, Iowa held frequent special and regular censuses but counties did not always comply with the requirements. Between the partial submissions and the loss of many of the old records, the existing state census information for Iowa is somewhat spotty.

The IAGenWeb census transcription project described at http://iagenweb.org/census/ provides information about several different censuses conducted by Iowa.

Note that there is a link for the head of most households that will take you to that individual's person page containing detailed information for him or her. If you click the link but your browser stays on this page, it indicates that there is no detailed person page included yet for that individual. An easy way to confirm that this is the case is to check for the person's name in the "Surname Index" - names only appear for people with a person page. Those types of links will gradually disappear as I continue adding people from my database.

Original spelling is retained in the information below - be aware that census records often contain many inaccuracies.

  1. His first initial may be an "F" instead of a "T" per Ancestry.com's transcription of the 1870 federal census. When I compared it to other names written by the enumerator that obviously contained a "T", I decided that Henry's initial was a "T" and have yet to find an official document to convince me otherwise.

Francis Six

ID#2430, b. 8 November 1835, d. 7 August 1910
Parents: Adam Six and Jane (unknown.)1

Birth date: 8 November 1835.2,3
Birth place: Virginia.4,5 It has also been reported that Francis was born in Greene County, Pennsylvania.6

Francis married Henry Church, son of Henry Church and Ann "Nancy" Goddard, in 1852 (based on report of 48 years married on the 1900 U.S. census.)5

Francis died at age 74 on 7 August 1910.2 Interred in the Butcher Cemetery, Wetzel County, West Virginia, her name appears on the gravestone as "Francis Church." An additional inscription reads, "Born Nov 8 1835, Died Aug 7 1910." Dates are not ironclad as they are hard to read in the photo - in fact, I have seen other transcriptions that show her birth date as Nov 6, 1836.2
