Trying to determine this man's given name was an effort. I first found him as John E. in the 1870 federal census, then as Jonah A. in the 1880 federal census - in both cases he was living with his parents. Considering the reported ages, it seemed possible that this was the same person - and I figured John could be a nickname for Jonah. I thought I'd take a look at OurFamilySaga.com, the website of Summers researcher Del Groves, to see how he had this son identified. Sure enough, Del had him recorded as Jonah 'John' Elbert Summers. So until such time as I'm proven wrong, I will stick with my hunch that John was a name by which Jonah was commonly known. I'm still looking for official documentation to confirm whether Elbert was his middle name.2
