Marriage intentions for Cleopatra Sherwin and Rufus Bartlett were filed on 13 May 1815 in Clinton, Kennebec County, Maine. The practice of recording the marriage intent in the town meeting books and publishing the notice prior to the marriage ceremony gave local residents the opportunity to state their objections to a marriage. The intention does not prove that the marriage occurred, only that it was intended.4

In this case, though, the marriage did take place as Cleopatra and Rufus were married at Clinton, Kennebec County, Maine, although the exact date is not confirmed. Two dates have been reported by other researchers: 10 June 18155 or 1 June 1815.6

Cleopatra died on 19 December 1860 in Marshall County, Virginia.7 Cleopatra's body was interred in the Bartlett-Rulong family cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia; her name appears on the gravestone as "Cleopatra, wife of Rufus Bartlett." The inscription reads, "Died Dec 19, 1860 In her 61_ Yr.
Whilst in His embrace our Mother lies, Her spirit ... In realms ... ."
(I can't make out the rest).7
