Elias Sheridan Alley1

ID#1500, b. 21 June 1873, d. 3 September 1952
Father: William Leaper Alley
Mother: Matilda Sibert

Birth date: 21 June 1873
Birth place: Lynn Camp, Marshall County, West Virginia.1,2,3,4

Commonly known by his middle name, Sheridan.

On 8 August 1895 in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia, Elias applied for a marriage license with Mary H. "Mollie" Young, daughter of Reason Young and Catherine V. Eller. They are identified by the names they commonly used, Sheridan Alley and Mollie Young.5 The actual date of their marriage is unknown from the marriage record which contains the following certification dated 21 November 1910, "Minister is deceased and failed to make a return. The following sign their names as witnesses to the marriage: E. D. Young, Frederick Young." The certification was signed by J. E. Chase, Clerk.5 It is likely that they were married shortly after the issuance of the license based on the 1900 federal census which reported that they had been married four years. As the official date of that census was 01 June 1900, they could have been married as late as 01 June 1896.4

Elias died at age 79 from cerebral apoplexy, arterio sclerosis on 3 September 1952 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, Marshall County, West Virginia. His death followed 3 years of pernicious anemia and 4 years of acute and chronic nepritis (inflammation of kidney.)3,6 Sheridan's body was interred on 5 September 1952 in the Fairview Cemetery, Rt. 250, Fairview, Marshall County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "Sheridan Alley."3
