Howard died at age 63 on 6 March 2005 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, Marshall County, West Virginia.1

An obituary was published on 7 March 2005 in the Wheeling News-Register.1 The following is a transcription of that obituary:

"DAVES, Howard E. Sr., "Gunny," 63, of Moundsville, W.Va., died Sunday, March 6, 2005 in Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, W.Va.
     He was born August 20, 1941 in Oklahoma, the son of the late Benjamin and Margaret Wilbur Daves.
     Howard was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and was a retired Correctional Officer with the WV Department of Corrections, Moundsville.
     He was a Baptist by faith; a member of The American Legion, Earl Francis Post 3, VFW, Post 437 and the Eagles Aerie 499 off of Moundsville. "Gunny" was a charter member and First Commander of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 710, Moundsville and a member of the Bridgeport, Ohio Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America.
     Surviving are his wife, Diane A. Lautar Siburt Daves; a son, Howard E. "Pete" Daves of Oregon; a daughter, Margaret M. Hardison and her husband, Bobby, of North Carolina; two brothers, Benjamin Daves of Oklahoma, and Aubrey Daves of Iowa; a sister, Gracie Jane Channel of Oklahoma; three grandchildren, Chelsey Daves, Matthew Carroll and Benjamin Hardison.
     Friends received from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. Tuesday at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Lutes and Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Avenue, Moundsville, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, 2005.
     The Moundsville Honor Guard, MOPH and Vietnam Veterans will conduct Military Services at the funeral home.
     Interment at the convenience of the family.
