William married Charlotte Sue Bartlett, daughter of Rufus Bartlett and Cleopatra Sherwin, in 1833; it is likely that they were married in Ohio County, Virginia.4,5,6

William died at age 71 from asthma on 18 April 1877 in Marshall County, West Virginia.7,8 Interred in the Burch Cemetery, Burch Ridge, Marshall County, West Virginia, his name reportedly appears on the gravestone as "William Harris".2,8
