John married Nancy B. Hubbs, daughter of George Hubbs and Sarah Ambler, on 27 February 1873 at her father's home in Marshall County, West Virginia. John Alley certified that he united them in marriage.3

John died at age 83 senility and arteriosclerosis on 23 June 1931 in Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia. A contributing cause was hemorrhage from his right lung.1 John's body was interred on 25 June 1931 in the Fork Ridge Universalist Church Cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "John W. Harris." The inscription reads, "John W. Harris ~ Nancy B. his wife ~ At Rest."4
