James married Bessie Jane Pierce, daughter of John Pierce and Amelia C. Talbott, on 13 November 1915 at Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia. W. E. Pierce certified that he united them in marriage.3

Jim died at age 66 from pneumonia on 27 December 1947 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, Marshall County, West Virginia. He had been in the hospital for a month after an operation for a ruptured appendix, complicated by pneumonia and liver abcess.4

An obituary was published on 27 December 1947 per an unidentified newspaper clipping.5 The following is a transcription of that obituary:

"Jas. A. Harris, 67, Prominent Farmer of Fork Ridge Dies
     James Alfred Harris, prominent farmer of Fork ridge, died at 6:20 o'clock this morning at Glendale hospital, where he had been a surgical patient since November 28. Death was attributed to pneumonia.
     He was born Sept. 3, 1881, in Marshall county, a son of the late Samuel and Mary Richmond Harris. He was a member of Fork Ridge Christian church. A farmer most of his life, he was a former teacher in county schools.
     Surviving are a son, Lawrence J. Harris, Moundsville; two grandchildren, James Lee and Roberta Jean Harris; a sister, Mrs. Bessie Stewart, Moundsville; and three brothers, John R. and Oscar Harris, both of Fork ridge and Isaac Harris of Bowman ridge.
     The body is at the Riggs funeral home."

James was reportedly buried in an unmarked grave on 29 December 1947 in the Fork Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, 8681 Fork Ridge Road, Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia. Jim was buried beside his wife, Bessie (Pierce) Harris per neice, Alda Louise (Harris) Kuhn.4,6
