Samuel McKinney Stewart1

ID#307, b. 24 January 1838, d. 21 March 1907
Father: Samuel Stewart
Mother: Sarah Wilson

Birth date: 24 January 1838
Birth place: Marshall County, Virginia.2,3,4,5,6

Interestingly, a birth date of January 1838 does not jive with the age given on either of his marriage licenses. 1838 is the year of birth that appears on Samuel's gravestone, and January 1838 is the birth date reported in the 1900 federal census. From that, he would have been 29 at his first marriage and 37 at his second marriage. Neither marriage license gives a date of birth, just his age ... but they are 24 and 33, a difference of 4 and 5 years.

Samuel's first marriage was to Mary R. Nixon, daughter of Robert Nixon and Levina Harris, on 22 August 1867 at Cameron, Marshall County, West Virginia. The minister, David Anguish, certified that he married them at "the house of the bride's mother."4,7

His second marriage was to Martha Emmaline "Mattie" Jefferson, daughter of John Jefferson and Rachel Lowrey, on 25 November 1875 in Marshall County, West Virginia. H. C. Sanford, a minister, certified that he united them in marriage at the bride's residence.6

Samuel died at age 69 from apoplexy (a stroke) on 21 March 1907 in Marshall County, West Virginia.8 Samuel's body was interred in the Fork Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, 8681 Fork Ridge Road, Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "S. M. Stewart."2
