Cancedella "Della" McGary1,2

ID#31, b. 20 February 1868, d. 19 May 1958
Cancedella "Della" McGary
Father: Arthur McGary
Mother: Louisa Perkins

Birth date: 20 February 1868
Birth place: West Virginia.1

The spelling of Cancedella's name seemed to be difficult for many people, especially Federal census enumerators. She appears as "Cancadal" in the 1870 census; as "Cancedell" in 1880; as "Cancedlea" in 1900. She was recorded as "Cancedela" in the birth record for her son Clarence, as well as the Marshall County Marriage Register, and that was misread by a transcriber as "Canudela" on a state-maintained website. The use of "ConsalDella" was found in a query on the intranet in 1998. All of the variations are similar on a phonetic basis, but a name that is not commonplace seems to have thrown a curve ball when folks actually tried to spell it. The person who recorded the birth of daughter Dessie took a different approach and recorded Cancedella's name using initials: C. D. Considering all this, it's easy to see why she was commonly known as Della!

On 9 July 1890 in Marshall County, West Virginia, Della applied for a marriage license with Charles G. Aston, son of James Aston and Rachel Job Anderson.3 S. L. Bristor certified that he united them in marriage on 25 December 1890 at Beeler's Station.3

She became a widow at age 80 when Charles died on 2 October 1948.6

Della died at age 90 from heart disease on 19 May 1958 at R.D. 2, Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. Her cause of death, arteriosclerotic heart disease decompensation, is commonly known as "hardening of the arteries."1 Della's body was interred on 22 May 1958 in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia; her name appears on the gravestone as "Della Aston."1
