Emma D. Harris

ID#314, b. 6 August 1860, d. 22 April 1862
Father: William Harris
Mother: Charlotte Sue Bartlett

Birth date: 6 August 1860 (based on age at death of 1 year, 8 months, 16 days)1 or on 11 August 1861 (based on age at death of 8 months, 11 days.)2
Birth place: Although not confirmed, it is likely that it was Marshall County, Virginia.

Emma died at age 1 on 22 April 1862.3 and was interred in the Burch Cemetery, Burch Ridge, Marshall County, West Virginia3

I have seen two different versions of the inscription on her gravestone but have not yet located an actual photo that would confirm which one is accurate. The first came from the Tri-County Researcher, a genealogy newsletter that included readings taken from 1977 through 1981 of inscriptions on gravestones in various cemeteries. Per that newsletter, there was a stone in Burch Cemetery with the name "Emma D. Harris" that included an additional inscription, "daughter of William & E., 8 mo. 11 days."2

The second version is from the Marshall County WVGenWeb site and is based on the reading by Tammy Burch in 1998 after an extensive cleanup was done in Burch Cemetery. According to her, the name on the stone was "Emi. A. D." and the additional inscription reads, "daughter of W. & C., died Apr 22, 1862 - 1yr 8m 16day."1 At this point, I suspect that the daughter's name was Emma as reported in the earlier reading. EMMA could have deteriorated to the point that the right side of the second M was not visible - EMI A would be left. It is easy for me to believe that EMMA D. could have become EMI A. D. as the stone aged.

According to the first reading, the parents were William and E; I'm guessing they read the stone as W. & E. and changed it to William because they knew that was the father's name. The initial E. for the mother has to be an error, perhaps a simple typo in the newsletter. The reading by Tammy Burch identifies the parents as W. & C. which would be correct.

As for the little girl's age at death, was it "8 mo. 11 days" or "1 yr 8m 16day"s? I'm still working on the resolution of that question!
