William S. "Bill" Church1

ID#36, b. 14 June 1834, d. 17 January 1926
William S. Church
Father: Samuel Church
Mother: Sarah Elizabeth Anderson

Birth date: He was born 14 June 1834 per a certification in his Civil War pension file that was based on "the family record of the age of William Church recorded in the family bible."2 Alternatively, a birth date of 14 June 1838 has been reported by a researcher who read his gravestone.3 As a further complication, U.S. census records for 1860 indicate that William was born about 18414 and the 1880 U.S. Census indicates he was born circa 1842.5

Birth place: Wetzel County, Virginia.5 It's pretty clear that the county and state are correct; but one record indicates that William was born in a location that I have yet to see confirmed anywhere else. Although spelled as "Patens Island, Wetzel Co., WV" in the Declaration of Pension filed on 08 August 1921 (relative to his Civil War service), I believe this would have been a misspelling of Paden Island, an 81-acre island in the Ohio River next to Paden City, West Virginia. See my blog post to learn more about the island.6

A middle initial of "S" is supported by Bill's Civil War pension file, the records for his second marriage, and the death certificates of his sons, Anderson and Enoch.7

William's first marriage was to Elizabeth Jane "Betsy" Roberts, daughter of Noah Roberts and Margaret Jones, on 27 December 1861 in Greene County, Pennsylvania.9 It has also been reported that William married Elizabeth on 29 December 1859.10

He became a widower at age 76 when Elizabeth died on 29 April 1911.11

His second marriage was to Catherine J. (Webb) Cunningham on 15 September 1912 in Calhoun County, West Virginia. W. S. Monroe was the officiating minister.12,13

William died at age 91 on 17 January 1926.14 William's body was interred in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Mt. Zion, Calhoun County, West Virginia.3

1880Wetzel County, West VirginiaWilliam Church, male, age 38, married, born in WVa, a farmer, could both read and write.

NOTE: While various transcribers of the 1880 census have read William's name to include "G" as his middle initial, the positioning is odd and the writing is unclear enough to leave doubt. In the upper right corner of the name block is what looks like three letters ending with a lowercase "g" - there is more than what would comprise a single initial. I believe that William's middle initial was an "S" based on other documents, and have elected to use no initial for the 1880 census until I find a clearer image that convinces me otherwise
