Martha Ellen Matthew1,2

ID#39, b. 24 April 1847, d. 23 August 1930
Martha Ellen (Matthew) Summers
Father: William K. Matthew
Mother: Mary "Nancy" Murphy

Birth date: 24 April 1847.3
Birth place: Believed to be Barbour County, Virginia.4

It should be noted here that Martha's father is shown as James Mathews on her death certificate, for which her son Walter was the informant. You would think a son would know the correct information about his grandparents, yet this certificate is blank for Martha's mother and shows her birthplace as Tyler County3 ... as opposed to Martha's marriage record that identifies her parents as William K. and Nancy and says that she was born in Barbour County. The death certificate seems less likely to be accurate than the info provided when Martha was married - an event for which Martha herself may have been the informant.

On the other hand, Martha's birthplace per the death certificate for her daughter, Matilda, appears as "Tylor County" which could be a misspelling of Tyler or Taylor County. Interestingly, this certificate also gives "Tylor County" as the birthplace for Martha's husband, but it looks like it initially said Taylor and was changed to Tylor.5

In addition to Matthew, I have seen Martha's maiden name spelled as Matthews in a handwritten family document and as Mathews on death certificates for her sons. I wrote about the variations in my WV Heritage blog.6,789

Martha married Joseph Summers, son of David Summers and Phoebe Williams, on 12 June 1865 at Fetterman, Taylor County, West Virginia.4

  1. The 1870 Federal census records many Summers and Matthew families living next to each other in Taylor County, WV. This would seem to support the thought that Martha's maiden name did not have an "s" on the end, and that there should be two vs. only one "t" in her surname.
