William married Sarah Aston, daughter of Owen J. Aston and Mary Creighten, on 17 February 1857 in Marshall County, Virginia. Wm. R. Howe certified that he united them in marriage.1

William died at age 78 on 26 September 1911 at Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas.2 William's body was interred in the Union Cemetery, Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas; his name appears on the gravestone as "William P. Gibson." His burial plot is located in the Graham Cemetery section, Block 7, Lot 48.2
