After his mother's death, Matt gained a stepmother when Catharina Schumacher married his father, Nikolaus.4

Matt emigrated from Antwerp, Belgium, in April 1886 with his family.5 Along with Nicholas Kuhn and Catharina Kuhn, Matt appears on the passenger list for the S.S. Rhynland which arrived in April 1886 at New York City, New York. Also listed: Anna Kuhn, Adam Kuhn and Catherine Kuhn. All are identified as citizens of Germany, having begun their journey from Wallerfangen, Germany, with an intended destination of East Liverpool. Information per the ship's manifest is as follows:

     Anna Kuhn, age 12, female
     Adam Kuhn, age 11, male

They are numbered 145 through 150 out of a total manifest of 347 passengers.5

His first marriage was to Rebecca A. "Beckie" Pierre, daughter of Frank Pierre and Melanie (unknown), on 6 November 1899 at Seneca, Monongalia County, West Virginia. H. Boutlan, a minister of the Catholic Church, certified that he celebrated the rites of marriage.6 The couple had obtained a marriage license on 4 November 1899 in Monongalia County, West Virginia.6

He became a widower at age 34 when Beckie died on 4 November 1911.7

His second marriage was to Margaret A. Ganz on 8 January 1918 at St. George's Church, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky.8,2

Sadly, Matt died at home (521 McLane Avenue, Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia) on 23 March 1942, his 65th birthday. He had an intestinal hemorrhage due to carcinoma of the stomach; his doctor had diagnosed the cancer on 20 October 1941. His body was interred on 26 March 1942 Beverly Hills Cemetery, Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia.2
