Robert married Nancy Jane Coon, daughter of Harrison Coon and Nancy Husk, on 23 August 1903 in Calhoun County, West Virginia. Eli Haught was the officiating minister for the ceremony, which took place at her father's residence on Barnes Run.4,3

Robert died at age 88 on 16 October 1965.1 Lee's body was interred in the St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery, Calhoun County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "R. E. Lee Summers." The inscription on his side of the stone reads, "He is not dead, but sleepeth."1
