Joseph's first marriage was to Rosa Henceroth, daughter of Henry Henceroth and Jane Alman, on 9 February 1920 at Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. Rev. D. G. Slater certified that he united them in marriage. Note that Rosa's surname was misspelled as "Hencreoth" on the marriage record.2

He became a widower at age 29 when Rose died on 11 June 1924 from complications with the birth of their daughter, Rosa May.3

His second marriage was to Mary Gertrude Ryan, daughter of Isaac Newton Ryan and Emma Eveline Kerns, on 29 July 1925 at Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. James B. Smith certified that he united them in marriage.4

Joseph died at age 87 on 12 January 1983 in Marshall County, West Virginia.5,6 Joe's body was interred in the Fork Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, 8681 Fork Ridge Road, Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "Joseph M. Aston." The inscription reads, "From the branch of life, three leaves have fallen." There is one gravestone for Joseph, his second wife Mary, and their daughter Judy.7
