Kentucky
During its early settlement, Kentucky was actually Kentucky County, Virginia. In 1777 Virginia's General Assembly had divided Fincastle County into three parts and created Washington, Montgomery, and Kentucky Counties. By 1789 these three counties had become nine counties (Jefferson, Fayette, Lincoln, Nelson, Bourbon, Madison, Mercer, Mason and Woodford). An act passed by Virginia's General Assembly on 18 December 1789 allowed these nine counties to apply for statehood, resulting in the admission of Kentucky as a state on 01 June 1792.
