(West) Virginia
Many people who lived in the part of western Virginia that became West Virginia would state in later years that an event occurred in West Virginia even if it happened prior to West Virginia's statehood. For example, persons born prior to 20 June 1863 would often have W. Va. listed as their birthplace on census forms even though they were technically born in Virginia. While it was an inaccurate practice, it does give an indication as to the location of an event - so I like to use (West) Virginia to distinguish that an event occurred in the part of Virginia that would become West Virginia in 1863.
