James Aston
ID#166, b. 2 April 1831, d. 26 September 1904
Father: Owen J. Aston
Mother: Mary Creighten
Birth date: 2 April 1831.1,2
Birth place: Ohio County, Virginia. As many records show that James was born in Marshall County, he was obviously born in the southern part of Ohio County from which Marshall County would be formed in 1835.3,2
Photograph of James. Date taken: unknown. Location: Plummer's, 1138 Main Street, Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. Click on camera to view full (or larger) image than the one shown here, then use your browser's back button to return to this page.4
As of February 1858, James was a cooper, meaning he made or repaired wooden vessels with staves and hoops, e.g. barrels, casks or tubs.3
James married Rachel Job Anderson, daughter of Jesse Anderson and Angeline (unknown), on 10 February 1858 in Marshall County, Virginia. David Anguish certified that he united them in marriage.3
At age 73, James died from a ruptured cerebral artery on 26 September 1904 at Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia.5
The date of death recorded on James' gravestone is 24 September 1904. Interestingly, it is recorded in the Death Register that the "duration of disease" was two days, the difference between the day recorded officially and the day that appears on his gravestone.2
An obituary was published in the Moundsville Echo. I was told that it was published on 30 September 1904, but this would be after the burial date so I believe that may be incorrect - the obituary reads as if the funeral and burial will be in the future.6 The following is a transcription of that obituary:
He was interred on 27 September 1904 in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia; his name appears on the gravestone as "James Aston."2

See my blog post about Anderson Photos for more details about my theory. Click on camera to view image, then use your browser's back button to return here.5
To complicate the issue I have two men named Jesse Anderson in my database: one with ID#176, whose wife's name is reportedly Angeline (Rachel's parents); the other is ID#233 whose wife is reported to be Anna (Maggie's parents). I suspect that the two men are one and the same, AND I won't be surprised if I discover that Angeline and Anna are the same woman. See my blog post about Jesse Anderson for more details.
Rachel married James Aston, son of Owen J. Aston and Mary Creighten, on 10 February 1858 in Marshall County, Virginia. David Anguish certified that he united them in marriage.6
At age 61, Rachel died on 31 October 1900.2 She was interred in the Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Fork Ridge Road, Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia; her name appears on the gravestone as "Rachel J. Aston."2,7

Father: William Henry Aston
Mother: Alma McGary
Birth date: 2 September 1896
Birth place: Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia.1,3

On 6 April 1917, the United States declared war on Germany and officially entered World War I. Every male living within the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 45 was required to register for the draft during one of three separate registration periods. The second registration was held 5 June 1918 for men who had turned 21 years of age since the first registration a year earlier. At age 21, James registered in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia, and was described as follows: gray eyes and dark brown hair.3 His residence at the time was R.F.D. 2, Glen Easton.3
The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. All men ages 18 to 64 and not already in the military were required to register for the draft during one of six registration periods. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "Old Man's Registration," was conducted on 27 April 1942 to register men who were between 45 and 64 years old. At age 45 (incorrectly recorded as 46 on the card), James registered at Rose Township, Carroll County, Ohio, and was described as follows: 6 ft. tall and weighing 160 pounds with gray eyes, black hair and a ruddy complexion.6
At the time of the WWII draft registration, James' residence was 6 miles north of Sherrodsville, Ohio, with a mailing address of R.D. #1, Sherrodsville.6
