1820 U.S. Census, Virginia, Tyler County

ID#3109, b. 7 August 1820
Prior to the 1850 U.S. Census, the head of each household was the only individual identified by name. All members of a household were classified by gender into age ranges (and these fell into groupings by race and slavery) - from these breakdowns it is sometimes possible to extrapolate who the individuals were when info about the family is known from other sources. The households listed below show the classifications as reported, followed by names in italics when I have been able to determine them.

Note that there is a link for the head of most households that will take you to that individual's person page containing detailed information for him or her. If you click the link but your browser stays on this page, it indicates that there is no detailed person page included yet for that individual. An easy way to confirm that this is the case is to check for the person's name in the "Surname Index" - names only appear for people with a person page. Those types of links will gradually disappear as I continue adding people from my database.

Original spelling is retained in the information below - be aware that census records often contain many misspelled names.

1850 U.S. Census, Ohio, Richland County

ID#3110, b. 1 June 1850
As households were enumerated in a census (1850 and later), they were given consecutive dwelling numbers. Looking at the numbers shown below, consecutive numbers indicate "next door" neighbors, close numbers indicate families living near each other.

Note that there is a link for the head of most households that will take you to that individual's person page containing detailed information for him or her. If you click the link but your browser stays on this page, it indicates that there is no detailed person page included yet for that individual. Abraham P. Brookover (Jr.?)1

ID#3116, b. circa 1856
Per the 1860 U.S. census, it appeared that Josephus Brookover and Katharine (unknown) were candidates to be Abraham's parents;2 however, the informant on the marriage record for A. P. Brookover, Jr. and Sarah Jane Roberts was none other than A. P. Brookover, Sr., making it appear that there would have been two Abraham P. Brookovers being father and son. More research is needed to know the details of Abraham's parents.1

Birth date: circa 18561 or circa 1855.2
Birth place: Monongalia County, Virginia.1,2

Abraham married Sarah Jane Roberts, daughter of Alexander H. "Alec" Roberts and Lavina Ellen Ensminger, on 16 June 1878 in Wetzel County, West Virginia. Samuel Hanen, a minister of the Christian Church, certified that he united them in marriage at Mrs. Roberts', the bride's mother.1

John J. Brookover1

ID#3119, b. 20 December 1886, d. 23 February 1930
Father: Abraham P. Brookover (Jr.?)
Mother: Sarah Jane Roberts

Birth date: 20 December 18862,3 or on 20 December 1889.1
Although John's wife gave his year of birth as 1889 on his death certificate, I believe that is most likely incorrect. When John signed up for the WWI draft, he gave his date of birth as 20 December 1886 and his age as 30. I found a J. J. Brookover born on that date in Wetzel County, West Virginia, per a Birth Register Index. The index is typed and would have been transcribed from a birth register that was probably handwritten. That could explain why the parents of J. J. are listed as A. R. and I. J. Brookover when they should be A. P. and S. J. Brookover. At this point, I believe that 1886 is most likely the correct year of John's birth.2

Birth place: Wetzel County, West Virginia.1,2

On 6 April 1917, the United States declared war on Germany and officially entered World War I. As a result of the Selective Service Act passed on 18 May 1917, every male living within the United States between the ages of 18 and 45 was required to register for the draft during one of three separate registration periods. The first registration was held 5 June 1917 for men aged 21 to 31. At age 30, John registered in Madison County, Indiana, and was described as follows: medium height, black eyes, black hair, not bald, no disability.4

As of 5 June 1917, when he registered for the draft, John was employed by the Ames Shovel & Tool Co. and was living at 771 Delaware Street, Anderson, Indiana.4

John died at age 43 from pulmonary tuberculosis on 23 February 1930 at Anderson, Madison County, Indiana.1 He was buried on 25 February 1930 at Anderson, Madison County, Indiana.1
