Nancy Belle Johnson

ID#3274, b. 10 December 1864, d. 20 November 1960
Father: William H. Johnson.1
Mother: Elizabeth Staley.1

Birth date: 10 December 1864
Birth place: West Virginia.1

It is suggested that Belle, as she was commonly known,2 was born circa 1863 based on her reported age of 20 when she married Philip Zimmerman.3 Similarly, it is suggested that she was born circa 1868 based on her reported age of 26 when married to John Houck.4 However, neither of these dates jive with the ages reported through the years for census enumerations as well as the birth date of 10 December 1864 given on her death certificate.1

Belle's first marriage was to Philip L. Zimmerman on 25 July 1883 at Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia. Consent for the marriage was given by Nancy's father, William H. Johnson. J. A. Lancaster, a minister, certified that he united the couple in marriage.3 Belle became a widow at age 25 when Philip died on 10 April 1890.5

Her second marriage was to John Houck on 25 December 1894 at McMechen, Marshall County, West Virginia. The marriage was performed by A. J. Lyda.6,4 Once again she became a widow, this time at age 63 when John died on 26 June 1928.6

On 20 November 1960 at age 95, Belle died at home (700 Grant Street, McMechen, Marshall County, West Virginia) from colon cancer.1 She was interred on 23 November 1960 in the Greenwood Cemetery, 1526 National Road, Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.1

ID#3275, b. 15 November 1868, d. 26 June 1928
Father: John Houck, born in Germany.1
Mother: Helena Ulmer, born in Germany.1

Birth date: 15 November 1868.1 Conflicting evidence indicates that John was born in November 1867.2
Birth place: Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania.1

John married Nancy Belle (Johnson) Zimmerman on 25 December 1894 at McMechen, Marshall County, West Virginia. Although she was only 26 or 30 years old (depending on the source), she had already been a widow for 4 years 8 months. The marriage was performed by A. J. Lyda.1,3

John was employed as a locomotive engineer per the 1900 federal census and his death certificate.2,1

On 26 June 1928 at age 59, John died at home (1100 Baltimore Street, McMechen, Marshall County, West Virginia) from acute indigestion.1 He was interred on 29 June 1928 in the Greenwood Cemetery, 1526 National Road, Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.1

Ales Ann Boyles1

ID#3277, b. 1849
Father: Charles Boyles.1
Mother: Sarah A. (unknown.)1

Birth date: 18491
Birth place: Monongalia County, Virginia,1 or Tyler County, Virginia.2

I wondered how her first name would have been pronounced until I found records from her later years in which her first name was spelled as Alice. Her name can be found as Alis A. Coffield after she married her second husband. The question is whether Ales and Alis were misspellings of Alice, or whether a non-traditional spelling was correct - although the two unique spellings still leave doubt. At this point, it appears that Ales was the earliest and most common spelling, so I have opted to show Ales Ann as her given name ... at least for now!

Ales's first marriage was to John C. Stewart on 9 September 1866 in Tyler County, West Virginia.1 She became a widow when John died on 7 February 1877.3

Her second marriage was to David Coffield on 14 April 1879 in Tyler County, West Virginia.4,2

Two spellings of her first name can be found: Sallie is generally more prevalent in earlier documents, whereas Sally generally appears in later ones. As Sally is also the spelling used on her gravestone, it seems most likely to be the one she preferred and used.6

While nearly every document I have found for this woman has shown her first name as either Sallie or Sally, there is one document that gives her first name as Sarah. Interestingly enough, the name Sally originated as a common nickname for Sarah. A few documents have only shown her initials, S. C., but an "S" could be either Sally or Sarah. I have chosen to not use Sarah unless I find evidence that it is the correct name, but I can't help but wonder if she was a Sarah who was so commonly known as Sallie/Sally that her real name was basically abandoned. Of course it is also possible that the county clerk simply assumed that her first name was Sarah and that Sally was just a nickname!7

Sally married Joseph Madison Flint on 25 March 1874 in Doddridge County, West Virginia.4 Sallie reported having 12 children; 8 were still living.8 She died at age 95 on 18 October 1950.5 Interred in the Bard Cemetery, Bard, Quay County, New Mexico, her name appears as "Sally Davis Flint" on the gravestone shared with her husband.
