This woman's given name leaves me scratching my head! Her birth record and the 1880 federal census identify her as Iva I.,^1,3 yet the 1900 federal census and her gravestone show her as Ily.² I thought I might find that her name was Iva Ily and that she was known by her middle name when she was older. Interestingly, the memorial for her on Find A Grave gives her name as Ily Iva⁴, the reverse of what I expected. I have also seen her name as Ivy, but I've seen that for other women named Iva who were commonly known as Ivy. So...

I have decided to presume that Iva Ila is correct based on her birth record and the 1880 census and that Ivy was a nickname. It makes sense to me that those two early records showing her as "Iva I." would represent the name given her by her parents, and the middle initial could easily be for Ily. Needless to say, further research could turn up something more definitive.

Iva married Lloyd Yoak 28 July 1895 in Doddridge County, West Virginia.^5,6 She died at age 30 on 1 July 1908.^7,4 She was interred in the Sand Ridge Cemetery, Lee District, Calhoun County, West Virginia; her name appears on the gravestone as "Ily Yoak." The inscription reads, "wife of Lloyd Yoak."^7,4 Lloyd remarried (after Iva died) and is buried with his second wife, Mary E. Adams.^8,9
