Chalmer Sylvester Hill1

ID#347, b. 2 May 1889, d. 15 February 1973
Father: Isaac Hill
Mother: Luella May Marshall

Birth date: 2 May 1889
Birth place: Kausooth, Marshall County, West Virginia.2,3

Chalmer married Essie Irene Harris, daughter of Oscar Leslie "Bones" Harris and Mary Bane Cummins, on 11 December 1912 at Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. James B. Smith, Minister, certified that he united the couple in marriage.4

On 6 April 1917, the United States declared war on Germany and officially entered World War I. As a result of the Selective Service Act passed on 18 May 1917, every male living within the United States between the ages of 18 and 45 was required to register for the draft during one of three separate registration periods. The first registration was held 5 June 1917 for men aged 21 to 31. At age 28, Chalmer registered in Akron, Summit County, Ohio, and was described as follows: tall, slender, blue eyes, brown hair, not bald.5 He was living at 69 Edgerton Road, Akron, Ohio,5 and was employed as a caretaker (by an employer whose name I could not decipher) in Akron, Ohio.

The U.S. officially entered World War II on 8 December 1941 following an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. All men ages 18 to 64 and not already in the military were required to register for the draft during one of six registration periods. The Fourth Registration, often referred to as the "Old Man's Registration," was conducted on 27 April 1942 to register men who were between 45 and 64 years old. At age 52, Chalmer registered at Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio, and was described as follows: white, 5' 2", 200 lbs., blue eyes, brown hair, ruddy complexion. His registration was dated April 25th, two days before the official date.3 As of that date, he was living at 3436 Franklin Street in Bellaire,3 and was employed by Wheeling Steel Corporation in Wheeling, West Virginia.3

Chalmer died on 15 February 1973 at age 83 in a long term care facility in Belmont County, Ohio.6

Isaac Hill Jr.1

ID#348, b. 8 March 1896, d. 27 June 1954
Father: Isaac Hill
Mother: Luella May Marshall

Birth date: 8 March 1896
Birth place: Marshall County, West Virginia.2,3,4
While all records I had seen agreed that Isaac was born in Marshall County, there was a discrepancy as to a more exact location. His WWI Draft Registration says he was born in Belton (Bellton), whereas his birth record says it was in Denver. A Google search confirmed that there is a Denver in Preston County, West Virginia, but not in Marshall County. However, there is an unincorporated community known as Denver Heights in Marshall County at the intersection of U.S. 250 and Rt. 89. (Per https://westvirginia.hometownlocator.com/ there was a Denver Heights School that closed in 1955.) Presumably the birth location of Denver was actually Denver Heights, located south of Bellton which would solve the discrepancy!5

Isaac married Dessie L. Harris, daughter of Oscar Leslie "Bones" Harris and Mary Bane Cummins, on 8 July 1918 in Moundsville, Marshall County, West Virginia. G. D. Smith, Pastor of the M. E. Church, certified that he united them in marriage.1 As of the date of their marriage license, Isaac had been living at Kausooth, West Virginia, and Dessie at Moundsville, West Virginia.1

At age 58, Isaac died from coronary occlusion on 27 June 1954 at Reynolds Memorial Hospital, Glen Dale, Marshall County, West Virginia.6 He was interred on 3 July 1954 in the Fork Ridge Christian Church Cemetery, 8681 Fork Ridge Road, Glen Easton, Marshall County, West Virginia.6

Russell Harris Stewart1

ID#360, b. 13 March 1904, d. 28 August 1985
Father: Charles Keller Stewart
Mother: Olivia "Ollie" Harris

Birth date: 13 March 1904.
Birth place: Cameron (RFD), Marshall County, West Virginia.1

As of 1935, Russell lived at Honolulu County, Hawaii.2

Russell presumably married Madolyn Leslie, daughter of John Leslie and Ivery Mullins, about 3 September 1939 in Boyd County, Kentucky. This theory is based on the delayed birth certificate for Russell which includes the following as supporting documentation: "Marriage Register #5300, Boyd County Court, Kentucky" and lists the date the original document was made as 03 September 1939.1

Per the obituary of his sister, Rhea, Russell was living in New York City at the time of her death in 1946. If I am correctly reading Russell's delayed birth certificate filed in Kings County, New York, his address as of 7 July 1950 was in Springfield Gardens, a neighborhood in the southeastern area of the New York City borough of Queens.3

Russell and Madolyn were divorced on 10 June 1985 in Hillsborough County, Florida.4

At age 81, Russell died on 28 August 1985 in Sarasota County, Florida.5,6
