He was a saw mill laborer per the 1870 federal census4 and was a sawyer on a saw mill per the 1880 census.5 By the time of the 1900 census, he was working as a blacksmith3 and was self-employed in his own blacksmith shop per the 1910 census.6 He was no longer working by the time of the 1920 census when he was 71 years old and living with his son, Lewis.7 It's interesting that his death certificate indicated that he was a carpenter by trade when that was never an occupation reported on any of the census records I have found.2
