Rachel Ann Elliott1,2

ID#1240, b. 22 April 1874, d. 23 January 1923
Father: Anderson T. Elliott.3
Mother: Mary Kelly.3,4

Birth date: 22 April 1874.3 It has also been reported that Rachel was born in April 1873.5
Birth place: Calhoun County, West Virginia.3

Rachel's first marriage was to George W. Church, son of Henry S. Church and Margaret (unknown), on 9 July 1891.4,6

She became a widow at age 26 when George died on 10 April 1901.7 I had originally found a birth record for Thomas dated 16 June 1904 showing his name as T. F. Summers with parents being Rachel Summers and Tom Summers. This information had been reported by the assessor, but there was no reason to assume it was inaccurate.8 However, I started looking at it a little harder after stumbling across the birth record for Thomas Church exactly one year earlier showing no father but the mother was Rachel Church nee Elliott.9 My theory on what must have happened is this:
(1) Rachel Elliott married George W. Church, who died in 1901 and left her a 26-year-old widow with five children.
(2) Rachel continued using the last name of Church, and when her sixth child was born on 16 June 1903, he was named Thomas F. Church. The father's identity was not reported.
(3) On 14 April 1905, Rachel Church married Thomas Franklin Summers; however, they may have been living together before that. Consider that it was an assessor who reported the birth of Thomas as being on 16 June 1904 ... if the couple was living together when the assessor visited, he/she probably assumed they were married and that the young boy's last name was Summers. In fact, Rachel's surname was entered as Summers, although she had not yet remarried.
(4) The assessor reported the correct month and day for Thomas' birth, but an incorrect year. At first I thought maybe the incorrect year had been reported by the parents to hide the fact that Thomas was born before Rachel and Tom were married. However, remembering that their marriage record is in 1905, that seems much less likely to be the case as those kind of cover-ups are generally only off by one year, not two. It's also possible that the year was mis-written by a clerk as most of the entries on that page were in 1904.
(5) Nevertheless, it seems to be a safe bet that Tom was in fact Thomas' father - especially as Rachel named her baby Thomas Frank. While Thomas was born with the surname Church, he obviously used Summers, as reflected by documents throughout his life.
(6) One last thought is that perhaps the birth register entry giving Thomas' surname as Church was the real error in this scenario. While Rachel's surname was still Church when he was born, she may have decided to give him the surname of his father, Summers, but that decision may have not been reflected in the birth register. A clerk may have mistakenly assumed that without the presence of the father's name, the baby would have the mother's surname. In this case, he would have been Thomas Frank Summers all of his life, regardless of what appeared on the birth record!9

Her second marriage was to Thomas Franklin Summers, son of Joseph Summers and Martha Ellen Matthew, on 14 April 1905 in Calhoun County, West Virginia. M. W. Stout, a minister of the gospel, certified that he united them in marriage at his residence. Rachel was identified as a widow still using the surname of her deceased husband.3 Rachel reported having 8 children; 8 were still living.10

Rachel's third marriage was to Cloid Dwight Wright, son of Emmett Bryan Wright and Margaret B. Stump, on 10 October 1921 at Grantsville, Calhoun County, West Virginia. Floyd W. Dick, pastor of the M. E. Church South in Grantsville, certified that he united the couple in marriage. Both parties were recorded as divorced; Rachel was still using the surname of her second husband.11

On 23 January 1923 at age 48, Rachel died at home (1914 Murdoch Avenue, Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia) from uterine cancer.12 She was interred on 26 January 1923 in the St. Paul United Methodist Church Cemetery, Center District, Calhoun County, West Virginia.12

Anderson T. Elliott1,2

ID#1242, b. about 1845
Father:
Mother:

Birth date: about 1845.3
Birth place: Iowa His place of birth as recorded when he got married was "Waplo County, Iowa," which I assume was a mispelling of Wapello County.3

Somewhere I once read that he was born on the Mississippi River, but I failed to document the source at the time. However, the previously mentioned Wapello County is in interior Iowa, not along the river - so I am not putting much stock in that assertion without some kind of proof.

Another spelling of his surname is Eliot.2

Anderson's first marriage was to Mary Kelly on 14 June 1866 in Calhoun County, West Virginia. The ceremony was performed by Joseph Smith.3

He became a widower when Mary died on 5 December 1888 at the young age of 40.4
