Thomas Franklin Summers
ID#636, b. 24 November 1872, d. 5 March 1958
Father: Joseph Summers
Mother: Martha Ellen Matthew
Birth date: 24 November 1872.1
Birth place: Taylor County, West Virginia.2 I had originally found a birth record for Thomas dated 16 June 1904 showing his name as T. F. Summers with parents being Rachel Summers and Tom Summers. This information had been reported by the assessor, but there was no reason to assume it was inaccurate.3 However, I started looking at it a little harder after stumbling across the birth record for Thomas Church exactly one year earlier showing no father but the mother was Rachel Church nee Elliott.4 My theory on what must have happened is this:
Thomas married Rachel Church, daughter of Anderson T. Elliott and Mary Kelly, on 14 April 1905 in Calhoun County, West Virginia. M. W. Stout, a minister of the gospel, certified that he united them in marriage at his residence. Rachel was identified as a widow still using the surname of her deceased husband.2
Photograph of Thomas with his parents and several siblings. Date taken: August 1917. Location: unknown. Eight of their 14 children are in this photo. Click on camera to view image, then use your browser's back button to return here.5
At age 85, Thomas died from arteriosclerotis on 5 March 1958 at Sweet Springs, Monroe County, West Virginia. He was apparently in a nursing home at the time of his death as the informant listed is the Andrew S. Rowan Mem. Home.6 However, the death certificate states that his usual residence was at Mt. Zion.6 Thomas' body was interred in the Mt. Zion United Methodist Cemetery, Mt. Zion, Calhoun County, West Virginia.6

(1) Rachel Elliott married George W. Church, who died in 1901 and left her a 26-year-old widow with five children.
(2) Rachel continued using the last name of Church, and when her sixth child was born on 16 June 1903, he was named Thomas F. Church. The father's identity was not reported.
(3) On 14 April 1905, Rachel Church married Thomas Franklin Summers; however, they may have been living together before that. Consider that it was an assessor who reported the birth of Thomas as being on 16 June 1904 ... if the couple was living together when the assessor visited, he/she probably assumed they were married and that the young boy's last name was Summers. In fact, Rachel's surname was entered as Summers, although she had not yet remarried.
(4) The assessor reported the correct month and day for Thomas' birth, but an incorrect year. At first I thought maybe the incorrect year had been reported by the parents to hide the fact that Thomas was born before Rachel and Tom were married. However, remembering that their marriage record is in 1905, that seems much less likely to be the case as those kind of cover-ups are generally only off by one year, not two. It's also possible that the year was mis-written by a clerk as most of the entries on that page were in 1904.
(5) Nevertheless, it seems to be a safe bet that Tom was in fact Thomas' father - especially as Rachel named her baby Thomas Frank. While Thomas was born with the surname Church, he obviously used Summers, as reflected by documents throughout his life.
(6) One last thought is that perhaps the birth register entry giving Thomas' surname as Church was the real error in this scenario. While Rachel's surname was still Church when he was born, she may have decided to give him the surname of his father, Summers, but that decision may have not been reflected in the birth register. A clerk may have mistakenly assumed that without the presence of the father's name, the baby would have the mother's surname. In this case, he would have been Thomas Frank Summers all of his life, regardless of what appeared on the birth record!4

Father: Joseph Summers
Mother: Martha Ellen Matthew

Commonly known by his middle name, Lawrence. His first name of Victor does not appear on his marriage record, on census records once he was an adult, or on his gravestone. According to a handwritten family record, Lawrence was also known by the nickname, Dot; but I suspect that it was probably used among family as I have not found a reference to it anywhere else.
Lawrence married Artie C. Fairbee, daughter of Silas Fairbee and Bathsheba McMillan, on 31 December 1916 in Roane County, West Virginia. Wellington Lester certified that he united them in marriage at the home of the bride's parents.4
Photograph of Victor with his parents and several siblings. Date taken: August 1917. Location: unknown. Eight of their 14 children are in this photo. Click on camera to view image, then use your browser's back button to return here.5
At age 52, Lawrence died on 26 July 1935.3,1,2 Interred in the Drakesburg Cemetery, Drakesburg, Portage County, Ohio, his name appears as "Lawrence Summers" on the gravestone shared with his wife. The date of their marriage, Dec. 31, 1916, appears in a heart.3
